PURE®, Making Materials More Sustainable
Off-odour was once the silent threshold of everyday life.
Leather of the past always carried an unmistakable trace — the sharp smell of a new sofa, the acrid tang of a new car interior, the vaguely chemical scent of a new phone case. They seemed to whisper:quality comes at a price.
We grew so used to paying this price that we came to mistake it for the very nature of “newness,” as if quality and purity were separated by an unbridgeable gulf.
Yet today, from IKEA sofas toBuick’s cabin, from Xiaomi ear tips toGucci’s handbag, these leading names from home, mobility, consumer electronics and fashion accessories all point, as if by unspoken agreement, to the same answer —
Water-based synthetic leather
It carries no off-odour, yet holds within it an imagination of the future; it does not come from animals, yet retains the warm hand feel that only genuine leather offers. And PURE®® Changfeng New Materials is one of the pioneers and definers of this solvent-to-water shift, and the world’s first company to mass-produce 100% water-based synthetic leather.
That threshold of off-odour is being quietly removed — in the most understated way.
Behind the Brand Consensus
A Relentless Pursuit of Purity
PURE®
When IKEA, Buick, Xiaomi and Gucci — four leading brands spanning home, mobility, consumer electronics and fashion — almost simultaneously“purity” as their material benchmark, it became an unspoken industry convergence.
Roll the clock back to 2006, when IKEA drew an increasingly hard line: the gradual phase-out of hazardous chemicals. Today, its restricted-substances list is stringent enough to cover DMF, bisphenol A and PFAS, among others. Conventional PU leather is locked out by solvent residue; fabrics that cannot be traced back to a clean source are vanishing, one by one, from IKEA’s supplier roster.
IKEA
Inside the sealed cabin of a car, OEMs such as Buick are accelerating the move to greener interiors. Over 10 years of accelerated ageing, breathable and water-resistant microclimate management, a hand feel as soft as genuine leather — every one of these benchmarks is raising the bar for interior materials. This is not a nice-to-have; in an enclosed space, it is a hard requirement for both health and experience.
BUICK
In consumer electronics, Xiaomi’s obsession with “zero odour, zero formaldehyde” runs through every ear-tip and watch strap. Smart accessories worn against the skin demand a level of material safety on par with food-contact standards. In this small world that touches our skin day and night, no trace of harmful release is acceptable.
Xiaomi
In fashion, Gucci has woven sustainability into its brand DNA, with an almost obsessive demand for material traceability and low VOCs. The lining of a luxury bag or shoe needs more than the suppleness and durability of top-grain leather; it requires a full-chain proof of purity from feedstock to finished product.
GUCCI
Four sectors, four rigorous standards, all flowing to a single answer —
When environmental, safety and experience are written into the spec sheet at once, the solvent residue of conventional PU leather becomes a line that cannot be crossed. Andwater-based synthetic leather, which replaces organic solvents with water, cuts off harmful substances at the source — filling exactly that cross-industry “purity list.”
The Philosophy of “Water”
An Art of Subtraction in Materials
PURE®
Why does conventional PU leather have a pungent smell?
Conventional PU leather is produced with organic solvents such as benzene, toluene and DMF. These chemicals continuously release VOCs that create an irritating odour, and prolonged exposure can even cause chronic health effects.
At its core, water-based synthetic leather is an elegant subtraction — replacing organic solvents with water.
DMF-free, benzene-free
Significantly reduced VOC emissions during production
Zero formaldehyde and zero irritating odour in finished goods
Water-based synthetic leather uses water as the dispersion medium, fundamentally eliminating harmful solvent residues. More importantly, the latest generation of water-based leather is no longer a “green but hard-to-use” compromise:
A hand feel remarkably close to genuine leather — fine, supple, with natural recovery
Significantly lower cost, ready for scale application
More than 10 years of accelerated ageing — resistant to peeling and cracking

No longer pungent, no longer “fragile” — this is a green revolution in materials, where purity meets resilience.

Automotive Interiors
Buick’s “breathing” cabin
Automotive interior materials must deliver all of the following: ageing resistance (over 10 years), abrasion resistance, tolerance of high and low temperatures, and low VOC emissions. PURE®® eco-leather has passed stringent automotive-grade tests — water-resistant, breathable, with the touch of genuine leather — and is becoming an important option in the interior upgrades of OEMs such as Buick.
